Slow Burn (Book 7 in The Blake Boys Series) Excerpt II
Tyler’s trying to get out of tricky situation.
Tyler had pocketed his cell phone on the plane but a quick feel around his body came up empty. He got up and went towards his leather duffle bag near the door but the chain was a few inches short of reaching it. He threw pillows, his boot and belt with a heavy metal buckle at the end of it but was no closer to grasping onto the bag to bring it closer. Finally, he combined the other boot and the belt and bingo! As soon as he unzipped the bag, he saw the cell phone and breathed a sigh of relief. Surely, one his brothers would help him out of this mess.
“Tate!” Tyler yelled as his brother answered on the third ring.
“Tyler, what do you want?” Tate mumbled.
“Hi Tyler.” Isabelle giggled in the background.
From all the giggling and groaning going on, it was clear he’d interrupted something but Tate’s libido would have to wait.
“Listen to me, I’ve been abducted.”
“Yes, really. I need you to call Sam or the police or somebody.”
“By who? Do you know where you are?”
“Yes, I’m at one of Seth’s houses. Michelle has me handcuffed to a chair.”
Tate chuckled. “I’d hardly call that an abduction. Ty, I just got back from Nashville and I haven’t seen my woman in five days. Call me when you’re being held at knife point by a deranged fan who thinks you’ve been singing to them personally since your first album.”
“That happened to you?” Tyler asked.
“I’ll tell you about it another time.” Tate disconnected the call.
Tyler scrolled the recent call list the best he could and saw Channing’s number. Channing was the smart, level headed one in the family. He hit the button.
“Hey baby brother. I’m in a jam and I need your help.” Tyler chirped.
“You’re always in a jam, that’s why I went to law school. Now is not a good time. I’m on a date.” Channing said in a low voice.
“You on a date? With Emma?”
“No, not with Emma.”
“You old dog. Who’s the new lady?”
Tyler let out a big, exaggerated sigh. Channing had a crush on her since the first day of law school. It was almost painful to watch his baby brother’s attempts to get next to her. “That’s not a real date.”
“It’s a work in progress.”
“Don’t tell me you’re following her around a museum again. I can’t believe you went all the way back to D.C to go to the friggin’ museum.” Tyler shook his head.
“Washington, D.C. has some of the best museums in the world. It wouldn’t kill you to visit more.”
“I did my tour of duty that time we took Jake and the boys to the Air and Space Museum.”
“You should be ashamed that toddlers were more excited about it than you were.”
“So you getting anywhere with Ms. Cassidy? She let you hold her hand this time?” Tyler laughed.
“Some women require a delicate touch.”
“I don’t understand why you torture yourself. You’re smart, rich and handsome in a nerdy kind of way and you’re a Blake. Dating women should be like shooting fish in a barrel.”
“Says the Blake who called me because he’s in a jam.” Channing laughed. “Cassidy doesn’t respond to all that alpha male crap. She’s different.”
“I’m just saying Tate would have wooed her by singing. Seth would have flexed a few muscles and that million dollar smile and J.J. would have just thrown her over his shoulder and explained how it was going to be.”
“Wow, such a sweeping generalization of our family.”
“Am I wrong?” Tyler huffed.
“Well no, but that’s not the point. What about that jam you’re in?”
“Michelle has absconded with me.”
“You don’t say? How did she pull that off?”
“I have no idea. I woke up in one of Seth’s living rooms chained to a chair and she made me lunch.”
“That sounds awful. Spending time in one of Seth’s nice houses with a woman you can’t stop thinking about who’s cooking for you.”
“And I’m chained to the chair.”
“How do I know this isn’t some kinky game of yours gone a rye?”
“Because I always keep a spare set of handcuff keys on me.”
“Cassidy’s coming back. I gotta go.”
“Did you not hear what I said?”
“I heard everything. Morgan said you might be calling and to ignore you. Suck it up you big baby.”
So Morgan knew about it! That was just great.
“I’m going to get you for this baby brother. Mark my words. The payback for not coming to my aid is going to be epic.”
“I’m so scared.” Channing hung up.
This wasn’t going well. But technically, minus the captivity part, it was a pretty sweet deal. He’d call J.J. Surely he’d put an end to it.
J.J. answered abruptly. “Tyler, I’m on a conference call, unless you’re dangling off a cliff, it’s going to have to wait.”
The phone disconnected before he could utter a word. OK, he’d call Seth. His quarterback brother was good at persuading people to do things. He could talk to the ladies on his behalf.
“Hi Tyler.” Morgan answered.
Tyler groaned. “Hey Morgan. Is Seth around?”
“Right here.” Seth’s voice boomed as it became apparent they were on speaker phone.
Tyler shook his head. He wasn’t going to get any help from Seth with Morgan around. “So where are the boys?”
“Taking a nap. They were tuckered out from trying to wrap presents. They are so excited about the holidays.”
“Those kids love to nap.” Tyler replied.
“Tyler, if you don’t mind, we have about hour before the boys wake up. Morgan and I are going to make good use of that time.” Seth said.
“Wait! I need your help. You can make another baby later.” He quipped.
